George Everest's House

Ruined residence of the surveyor who gave his name to the world's highest peak

About six kilometres west of Mussoorie on the Park Estate Road, the ruined residence and laboratory of Sir George Everest stands on a ridge spur with panoramic views in three directions. Everest was the Surveyor General of India who supervised the Great Trigonometric Survey of the subcontinent in the 19th century — the survey that eventually calculated the height of Peak XV and determined it to be the tallest mountain on Earth. The peak was later named after him, against his own wishes.

The buildings are partially restored and the site is now a viewpoint. The views from here are genuinely outstanding — on a clear day you can see both north toward the snows and south toward the entire Doon Valley. It is a moderately strenuous walk from the road. Shared taxis run to the area but you will walk the last section.
