Kempty Falls

Popular waterfall 15km from Mussoorie, crowded but impressive in monsoon season

Kempty Falls is about 15 kilometres from Mussoorie on the road toward Yamunotri, a multi-tiered waterfall that drops around 40 metres into a pool where visitors wade and swim. It is one of the most popular excursions from Mussoorie, which means it is almost always busy — weekends and holidays see the approach road clogged and the pool area packed.

The falls are at their most impressive during and just after the monsoon, when the volume of water is substantial and the surrounding hills are intensely green. In the dry season they are less dramatic but the crowds are also thinner. A shared taxi from Mussoorie takes around 30 minutes; the views along the road down toward the Yamuna valley are good.
