Landour

The quieter cantonment area above Mussoorie, home to old churches and Ruskin Bond

Landour sits above Mussoorie proper, reached by a steep walk or a shared vehicle from the main town. The cantonment is quieter and more atmospheric than the crowded bazaars below — old British-era buildings, stone churches, heritage schools like Woodstock and St George's, and the narrow Landour Bazaar with its Nepali and Tibetan character.

The writer Ruskin Bond has lived in Landour for decades, and his presence has given the area a modest literary cachet. He still occasionally appears at the Cambridge Book Depot, a tiny bookshop in Landour Bazaar that stocks his books alongside Indian and English fiction. The Chaar Dukan — four small restaurants near the top of the road — is a popular spot for breakfast and evening tea with views down into the valley.
