Jajmau sits on the eastern side of Kanpur above the Ganges, and is one of the oldest inhabited areas around the city. Archaeological finds point to a long settlement history, while the modern neighbourhood is closely associated with leather tanneries and the environmental problems that come with them.
This is not a polished tourist district. Go if you are interested in the older river landscape and the industrial reality behind Kanpur's leather trade. It is best visited by car or auto-rickshaw with a clear plan, not as a casual wander.
