Kanpur Memorial Church

Kanpur Memorial Church is a red-brick Gothic church in the old cantonment, built in the late 19th century to commemorate British deaths during the 1857 Siege of Cawnpore. Its spire, stained glass, and memorial tablets are among the clearest surviving pieces of colonial Cawnpore.

The church is quiet and usually lightly visited. It rewards travellers interested in history more than casual sightseers, but it is one of the few places in Kanpur where the city's British past is still physically legible.

A story
The church was built after the 1857 uprising as a memorial to British victims of the Siege of Cawnpore. Its architecture speaks in the language of imperial mourning: red brick, pointed arches, and a Gothic solemnity that feels far removed from the heat and noise outside.
