The main pilgrimage zone is compact enough for walking in cool weather. Auto-rickshaws are useful for linking the Parinirvana Temple area, Ramabhar Stupa, outlying monasteries, and the bus stand.
Start early if you are visiting from Gorakhpur as a day trip. The town is more rewarding before the midday heat and before tour groups move through the main temple.
