The Okhla Bird Sanctuary sits on the Yamuna floodplain at the Okhla barrage, the natural boundary between Delhi and Noida. Some 4 square kilometres of wetland, reedbeds and shallow lake attract migratory birds from Central Asia and Siberia in winter — flamingos, painted storks, northern pintails and a long list of waders. Resident species include the spot-billed pelican and several kingfishers.
A walking trail loops around the lake with a couple of viewing platforms and a small bird museum. The best time to visit is November to March, early in the morning, before the haze and the joggers arrive. Entry is via the gate near Okhla Bird Sanctuary metro station. Carry binoculars and water; the sanctuary has very little shade.
