Kankaleshwari Temple

Terracotta Kali temple in Kanchannagar with a striking eight-armed image of the goddess.

Kankaleshwari Temple is a navaratna, or nine-pinnacled, temple in Kanchannagar on the western side of Bardhaman. Its terracotta reliefs connect it to the wider Bengal temple tradition, where brick and baked clay carry the detail that stone carries elsewhere in India.

The temple's Kali image is said to have been found in the Damodar River in 1913. It has eight arms, four on each side, and gives the shrine a more unusual identity than the average neighbourhood temple.
