Hazarduari Palace

Grand Nawabi palace museum in Murshidabad's Kila Nizamat complex.

Hazarduari Palace is the headline sight of the Murshidabad area. Built in the nineteenth century for Nawab Nazim Humayun Jah, it now works as a museum of paintings, arms, furniture, and court objects from the last great phase of Nawabi Bengal.

The building is formal, European, and deliberately imposing, which makes a sharp contrast with the mosques and older tombs nearby. Give it proper time; rushing through the palace makes the whole Berhampore visit feel thinner than it should.

A story
Hazarduari means 'a thousand doors'. The palace is famous for that number, though some are false doors, a detail locals often explain as a trick meant to confuse intruders.
