Katra Masjid

Ruined mosque and caravanserai associated with Murshid Quli Khan.

Katra Masjid is one of the most powerful sights around Berhampore because it feels older and sterner than the palace buildings. Its surviving towers, arcades, and open courtyard hint at the mosque-caravanserai complex that once served merchants, students, and travellers.

The brickwork is weathered and partly ruined, which is part of the appeal. Come late in the afternoon if possible, when the low sun gives the site more depth and the surrounding traffic feels a little further away.

A story
Murshid Quli Khan, the founder of Murshidabad's fortunes, is buried beneath the steps of the mosque. The placement was meant as an act of humility: worshippers would pass over his grave on their way in.
