Eating Out

Kolkata is one of India's great food cities, and eating well here is remarkably affordable. Bengali cuisine is the star -- think fish in mustard sauce, luchi with dal, and sweets like rasgulla and sandesh that the city claims as its own. But you will also find excellent Mughlai food, a Chinatown with authentic Chinese cooking, and Tibetan momo stalls around Elgin Road. Park Street has long been the city's dining strip, though good restaurants are scattered across every neighborhood.

For Bengali fine dining, Oh! Calcutta and Aheli are the names to know. For Mughlai richness, try Sigree on the Bypass or the legendary Shiraz on Park Street. Do not leave without trying the street-side momos and the biryanis at Nizam's.
