G.T.S. Tower

G.T.S. Tower is a 75-foot masonry tower in Baranagar, built in 1831 for the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India. The survey was one of the great mapping projects of the 19th century and is tied to the work of George Everest, whose name later became attached to the world's highest mountain.

The tower is a modest stop, but it is a rare physical reminder of the surveying work that measured the subcontinent with extraordinary ambition.
