Writers' Building is one of Kolkata's great colonial landmarks, designed in the late 18th century for junior clerks of the East India Company. Its long red facade dominates the B.B.D. Bagh area and speaks directly to the city's years as the capital of British India.
The building is also tied to the independence movement, especially the 1930 attack by young revolutionaries against British officials inside. Even if you only see it from the outside, it helps explain the political weight of this part of central Kolkata.
