The Jalangi is a tributary of the Bhagirathi that meanders through Nadia district before joining the larger river near Nabadwip. In Krishnanagar it forms a long shallow curve along the eastern side of town, and locals walk its banks in the cool of the evening, particularly the stretch close to Ghurni.
The river is too sluggish and silty for swimming, but the ghats are pleasant for sitting, especially around sunset when fishermen drift past in flat-bottomed boats. A short walk along the bank from Ghurni gives a good sense of how Bengal's river plain feels at ground level.
