Krishnagar Government College was founded in 1846 and is the oldest college in Nadia district, one of the earliest institutions of Western-style higher education anywhere in Bengal outside Kolkata. The campus has a series of nineteenth-century colonial buildings — long verandas, tall shutters, deep brick walls — set around a green that is pleasant to wander on a quiet afternoon.
It is worth a short detour for visitors interested in the cultural history of Bengal: many leading figures in the Bengali renaissance studied or taught here, and the campus retains some of the dignity of that period despite the busy traffic around its gates.
