Bamakhepa Ashram

The ashram of Bamakhepa sits a short walk from the Tara temple, in a quieter lane away from the main pilgrimage press. The buildings are modest — a central shrine room with the saint's image, a small courtyard, residential quarters for resident sadhus — but the place carries the atmosphere of long habitation and practice.

Bamakhepa (1843–1911) spent most of his adult life in Tarapith and is credited with a series of miraculous healings and interventions. He had virtually no formal education and lived in deliberate transgression of caste rules and social convention, yet attracted followers from all classes. His example anchors Tarapith's reputation as a place where conventional religion gives way to something rawer and more direct. Visiting the ashram is a calm counterpoint to the intensity of the shmashana and temple.
