Pura Maospahit

Pura Maospahit is one of the oldest temples in Denpasar, believed to date from the 14th century during the Majapahit period — the era when Hindu-Buddhist civilisation from Java was transplanted to Bali, creating the unique syncretic culture still visible on the island today. The temple's name connects it to the Majapahit empire, and it is considered one of the sacred sites associated with the establishment of Balinese Hinduism.

The temple's most striking features are the large stone figures and carved reliefs in its outer courtyard — sculptures of Garuda, kala faces (demonic heads used as protective symbols above gateways), and ornamental stonework in a style older and more austere than the flamboyant carving typical of later Balinese temples. The building was significantly damaged in an earthquake in 1917 and partially rebuilt, but remains an atmospheric place in a quieter neighbourhood away from the main commercial streets. Access requires a sarong and is subject to normal temple etiquette.
