Warung Indonesia

A no-frills locals-and-backpackers warung on Poppies II — plastic tables, fluorescent lights, fan instead of air-conditioning, and a buffet line at the back where you point at what you want and pay for what is on your plate. Nasi campur with a couple of toppings comes in well under three dollars.

The food is straightforward Indonesian — fried tempeh, vegetable curries, chicken in coconut sauce, a half-dozen different sambals — and it is what Kuta tastes like when you peel back the tourist-pricing layer. Open from morning to late evening.
