Brahma Vihara Arama sits in the hills above Banjar, ten kilometres west of Lovina. Founded in the 1970s, it is the only Buddhist monastery on Bali and a working religious site rather than a museum piece — monks meditate in the halls and there are retreats for visiting practitioners.
The grounds spread across a terraced hillside and include a main vihara with a reclining Buddha, a meditation hall, and a scaled-down model of the great stupa of Borobudur. The replica is the photograph everyone takes. Sarong loan is included; dress modestly and walk barefoot in the inner halls.
