The morning dolphin trip is what Lovina sells. Wooden outrigger boats — jukungs — leave the beach at around six in the morning, motoring a kilometre or two offshore to where pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins gather to feed. The trips last around two hours and are usually back on the sand for breakfast.
Bookings are easy: every guesthouse arranges them, and touts walk the beach the evening before. Costs are modest. The experience has been criticised for the sheer number of boats — at peak times the dolphins are surrounded — and some travellers prefer to skip it on principle. If you go, ask your captain to keep distance and to cut the engine when a pod is near.
