Menjangan Island Snorkelling

Menjangan Island — Deer Island — sits off the north-west tip of Bali inside West Bali National Park, about an hour and a half drive from Lovina. The water is exceptionally clear and the dive sites are wall reefs rather than the flatter reefs of the south coast, which makes for dramatic snorkelling even at shallow depths.

Day trips run from Lovina by car to Banyuwedang, then by boat to the island. Mask and snorkel hire is straightforward; bring water and reef-safe sunscreen. The park entry fee is collected at the boat jetty.

A story
A wall reef drops from chest depth to fifty metres in a few strokes. Below the lip, gorgonian fans the size of dinner plates lean out into the current.
