Palagan Ambarawa Monument

The towering Palagan Ambarawa monument commemorates the Battle of Ambarawa fought between Indonesian republican fighters and British and Dutch troops in late 1945. The Indonesian victory — celebrated every 15 December as Infantry Day (Hari Juang Kartika) — is a key episode in the national independence narrative, and the open-air museum at the foot of the monument displays weapons, photographs, and a small fleet of captured Allied military vehicles.

The monument sits at the entrance to town from the Yogyakarta road and is hard to miss. Allow forty-five minutes for a quick look; an hour if you want to read the captions.
