Bogor Zoology Museum (Museum Zoologi Bogor)

The Bogor Zoology Museum sits at the main entrance of the Botanical Gardens and houses one of Southeast Asia's most significant natural history collections. Founded in 1894, it holds millions of specimens covering the fauna of the Indonesian archipelago, including insects, birds, reptiles, fish, and mammals.

The centrepiece is the complete skeleton of a blue whale in the main hall, one of the few such specimens on public display in the world. The mammal collection includes many species endemic to Indonesia, and the insect collection is particularly strong, covering the extraordinary biodiversity of the Indonesian rainforests. The displays are old-fashioned — this is not a modern interactive museum — but the collections are genuine and substantial.

Small admission fee; located adjacent to the Botanical Gardens main gate.

A story
The museum holds the skeleton of a blue whale — one of the few complete blue whale skeletons on public display anywhere in the world. It was washed ashore on the Java coast in 1916 and was assembled over several years. At 27 metres, it nearly fills the main hall.
