Borobudur is the single greatest monument in the Southern Hemisphere and the largest Buddhist structure ever built. The stepped pyramid rises through ten terraces — six square and three circular — and is aligned to the cardinal directions. On the lower terraces, 2,672 carved relief panels tell stories from the Jataka tales (the Buddha's previous lives), the Lalitavistara (the life of the historical Buddha), and the travels of the pilgrim Sudhana.
The experience changes as you climb. The lower galleries are enclosed and intimate, the reliefs close enough to examine detail. The circular upper terraces are open to the sky, and the 72 bell-shaped perforated stupas surround the great central stupa. On a clear morning the volcanic peaks of Merapi, Merbabu, Sindoro, and Sumbing are visible in every direction. Entry is included in the temple ticket (around USD 25–30 for foreigners).
