Kawah Putih is Ciwidey's headline sight: a collapsed volcanic crater filled with a pale lake that can look turquoise, milky blue or almost white depending on the light. The white banks, dead trees and drifting cloud make the place feel theatrical, but the sulphur smell is real. Bring a layer, take your photos, and do not linger too long beside the water if the fumes are strong.
