Ciwidey

Cool West Java highland village known for crater lakes, tea estates and strawberries.

Ciwidey is the southern highland escape from Bandung: cooler, greener and more open than the city, with tea estates, strawberry farms and volcanic scenery packed into a small area. The village itself is plain, but the district has some of West Java's most satisfying day-trip landscapes.

The main draw is Kawah Putih, a pale crater lake whose colour shifts between blue, green and white under sulphur mist. Nearby Situ Patenggang gives the day a gentler finish, with boats on a highland lake surrounded by tea plantations. Ranca Upas adds meadows, pine forest and deer enclosures, especially good if you are travelling with children.

Ciwidey works best as a full day out of Bandung or as a slow overnight in the hills. Weather changes quickly at this elevation, and the most atmospheric version often comes with mist, cold air and the smell of wet tea leaves.
