The Arjuna Temple Complex is the easiest place to understand why Dieng mattered. These small stone shrines are among the oldest surviving Hindu monuments in Java, built in the highlands when the plateau was a sacred landscape rather than a vegetable-growing district.
The temples are modest compared with Borobudur or Prambanan, but the setting gives them power: cold air, mist, volcanic hills, and the sense that the stones have outlasted a vanished world. Come at sunrise if you can; later in the day the site can feel busy and over-managed.
