Dieng Plateau

High volcanic plateau in Central Java with steaming craters, coloured lakes, and early Hindu temples.

The Dieng Plateau is one of Java's strangest highland landscapes: a cold volcanic plain around 2,000 metres above sea level, scattered with steaming craters, sulphur lakes, potato fields, and some of the island's oldest Hindu temples. Its name is often translated as "abode of the gods", and on a misty morning that does not feel like an exaggeration.

Most travellers come from Yogyakarta or Wonosobo and try to see the plateau in one rushed day. It is better with an early start and warm clothes. Arjuna Temple Complex is the cultural heart of Dieng, a compact group of 7th- to 8th-century shrines that survived where hundreds of others did not. Nearby, Sikidang Crater hisses and steams in open ground, making the volcano feel very much alive.

The natural sights are just as important. Telaga Warna changes colour with minerals and light, and the surrounding fields climb impossibly steep slopes. Dieng is beautiful, but it is also heavily farmed and sometimes crowded on weekends; go early, move slowly, and let the cold air and sulphur smell do their work.
