Mount Papandayan is Garut's standout excursion. The approach leads to steaming crater vents and sulphur-stained ground, then on toward the dead forest and open highland meadows that make the volcano feel varied rather than just dramatic.
It is one of the more manageable volcano days in West Java, but it is still mountain terrain. Go early, bring rain protection, and take the warnings around fumaroles seriously.
