Garut

Sundanese highland town near volcanoes, hot springs, leather workshops, and Cangkuang temple.

Asia > Indonesia > Java > Garut

Garut is a Sundanese highland town southeast of Bandung, surrounded by volcanoes, rice fields, and hot springs. It is not a polished resort town, and that is part of the point: Garut feels local, busy, and lived-in, with the mountains close enough to pull the day out of the streets.

The strongest reason to come is the volcanic country around town. Mount Papandayan has smoking craters, dead forest, and broad alpine meadows that make it one of West Java's most approachable volcano days. Closer to town, Cipanas is the old hot-spring district at the foot of Mount Guntur.

Garut also has a cultural anchor that Bandung lacks: Cangkuang Temple and Kampung Pulo, reached by a short raft crossing in Leles. Add leather workshops and the town's sticky dodol sweets, and Garut clears the bar as a worthwhile highland stop rather than just another Java service town.

Guide

Getting There

Garut is usually reached from Bandung by road. Buses and minibuses run through the Priangan highlands, but a hired car is much easier if you plan to continue to Papandayan, Cipanas, or Cangkuang on the same trip. Traffic around Bandung can make travel times longer than the map suggests.

When to Go

Garut is cooler than the Java lowlands, but rain still matters. The dry season, roughly May to September, is best for Papandayan and other outdoor trips. In the wet season, trails get muddy and volcanic viewpoints disappear quickly into cloud.
