Glodok (Chinatown)

Jakarta's centuries-old Chinatown with temples and street food

Jakarta's Chinatown sits just south of Kota Tua and has been the centre of Chinese-Indonesian life for over three hundred years. The narrow lanes off Jalan Pancoran are crammed with traditional medicine shops, dried-goods traders, gold dealers and some of the city's best street food -- noodle stalls, dim sum, and pork dishes you will not find anywhere else in Muslim-majority Jakarta. The Jin De Yuan temple, dating from 1755, is the oldest Chinese temple in the city and still active. Glodok was hit hard during the anti-Chinese riots of 1998, and parts still feel scarred, but the area has slowly come back and remains one of the most distinctive corners of the capital.
