Mount Merbabu

3,145m dormant volcano above Salatiga — one of Java's best trekking mountains

Mount Merbabu (3,145 m) looms directly above Salatiga to the southwest — on clear mornings the summit is visible from the town. It is a dormant stratovolcano and one of the most rewarding trekking mountains in Java, offering a relatively straightforward route through forest and alpine meadow to a summit with views of the active Mount Merapi to the south, the Dieng Plateau to the west, and, on the clearest days, the Indian Ocean.

The most common route starts from Kopeng, accessible by public transport from Salatiga. The ascent takes 6–8 hours; most trekkers start at night to reach the summit at dawn. A guide is recommended both for safety and for navigation in the dark. The National Park office in Kopeng can arrange guides and sell permits.

A story
Merbabu's name comes from the Javanese "meru" (mountain, the cosmic Hindu mountain) and "abu" (ash). The volcano last erupted in 1797. Because it has been quiet for two centuries, the upper slopes have developed a thick covering of alpine grassland and meadows that give it a markedly different character from the active volcanoes nearby — you climb through meadows rather than ash fields.
