Sam Po Kong is the largest Chinese temple complex in Central Java and one of the most important Chinese religious sites in Indonesia. It was built to commemorate Zheng He, the great 15th-century Chinese Muslim admiral who led massive trading and diplomatic fleets across Southeast Asia. According to local tradition, Zheng He anchored near this spot and a cave on the hillside became a site of veneration.
The current temple complex is large and elaborately decorated, with red lacquer, gold leaf, and dragon carvings covering almost every surface. The main hall contains a statue of Zheng He in imperial robes. The complex is busy year-round but especially during Chinese New Year and Zheng He's birthday celebrations (7th month of the lunar calendar), when thousands of pilgrims crowd the courtyard and the air fills with incense smoke.
Sam Po Kong is about 5 km southwest of the city center. Angklung performances and traditional Chinese arts are sometimes staged here during festivals. Admission is charged; traditional Chinese costume rental for photographs is offered at the entrance.
