A compact Shaivite temple from the early 8th century, rediscovered in a rice field in 1936 and carefully restored. The single-cell shrine is small — about eight metres on a side — but the carved figure of Ganesha on the rear wall and the lingam-yoni inside are unusually well preserved.
Candi Gebang is missed by most visitors, who head straight for the bigger temples at Prambanan. Half an hour is enough, and the quiet rural setting makes a pleasant contrast to the major sites.
