The Museum Gunung Merapi sits on the southern slopes of the volcano above Kaliurang. The exhibits — dioramas of past eruptions, seismic monitoring instruments, scale models of the cone — cover the geology and the lived history of Indonesia's most active volcano in plain language. A separate room is given over to tsunamis and earthquakes.
A 15-minute film shows the 2010 eruption footage and the aftermath. The view from the museum's upper terrace, on a clear morning, takes in the smoking summit itself.
