Balikpapan's appeal is partly its function — a comfortable, well-run city in which to base yourself for forays into Borneo's interior — and partly its genuine natural assets: accessible beaches, a large protected forest reserve with proboscis monkeys and orangutans, and some of the best diving in Borneo within day-trip distance.
