Wain River Protected Forest

A 10,000-hectare protected forest on Balikpapan's northern edge, one of the most accessible places in Borneo to see wildlife in relatively undisturbed lowland rainforest. The forest shelters Bornean orangutans, proboscis monkeys, sun bears, sambar deer, and more than 200 bird species, many endemic to Borneo.

The reserve can be visited with a permit from the Balikpapan conservation office. Guided walks are available and strongly recommended — the forest is dense and the wildlife is most visible with a knowledgeable guide who knows where the animals tend to congregate. Early morning is the best time for orangutan and proboscis monkey sightings.

A story
The Wain forest is one of the last significant lowland dipterocarp forests remaining in East Kalimantan, once covered by rainforest but devastated by logging and the catastrophic 1997-98 El Niño fires that burned millions of hectares across Borneo. Wain survived because it was already a protected water catchment for Balikpapan — a reminder that the city's water supply and the forest are inseparable.
