The wide, tree-lined boulevard running through the centre of Palangka Raya is the leftover of Sukarno's planning ambitions for the city — far more boulevard than the population needed at the time, and even now retains an unusually spacious feel for an Indonesian provincial capital.
A stroll along it at dusk, when the city's street-food carts come out, is the best way to get the measure of the place.
