The main gateway is Tjilik Riwut Airport, 13 km west of the city, with daily flights to Jakarta, Surabaya, and Banjarmasin. Overland from Banjarmasin (the larger neighbouring capital) is a five- to six-hour bus ride on a paved road — practical, but flights are not much more expensive.
