Gili Islands

Three car-free coral islands with excellent snorkelling and diving

The Gili Islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air — are three small coral-ringed islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, about 30 minutes by fast boat from Bangsal or Teluk Nare. They are among the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia, and it is easy to understand why: clear water, reliable snorkelling with turtles, white sand beaches, and no motor vehicles.

Gili Trawangan is the largest and most developed: the east coast beachfront is packed with dive schools, restaurants, and bars that stay open late. For those who want both liveliness and natural beauty, it works well. Gili Meno is the quietest and least developed of the three, with a birdlife sanctuary in the interior and the best beaches for solitude. Gili Air has a small community, a handful of good restaurants, and a vibe that sits between Meno and Trawangan. All three are reached by fast boat from Bali or by local boat (cidomo ferry) from the Lombok mainland.

A story
The Gili Islands have no motorised vehicles — no cars, no motorbikes. Transport is by cidomo (a small horse cart) or bicycle. This was not an environmental policy but a practical consequence of the islands' small size and the difficulty of importing fuel. It has become one of the Gilis' defining characteristics: the silence is unusual enough that arriving visitors almost always comment on it.
