Kuta Lombok

South coast surf town with spectacular crescent bays and a developing resort area

Kuta Lombok is a small town on the south coast with an exceptional setting: it sits on a crescent bay flanked by headlands, with more bays of similar beauty accessible by scooter or boat to the east and west. Selong Belanak, Mawun, and Tanjung Aan are among the finest beaches in Indonesia — long, clean, and (outside July and August) relatively uncrowded.

The surf around Kuta is serious — fast and powerful reef breaks that are best suited to intermediate and experienced surfers. Kuta itself has surf schools, board rentals, and plenty of accommodation ranging from basic homestays to mid-range hotels. The Mandalika resort development a few kilometres along the coast has added international-standard facilities; the overall area is growing fast but has not yet lost the appeal that made it worthwhile.

A story
Kuta in Lombok has nothing to do with Kuta in Bali except the name, which causes occasional booking confusion. The Lombok Kuta was a quiet fishing village until the 1990s and remains far less developed than its Balinese namesake. The Mandalika resort development nearby — including an international racing circuit that hosted the MotoGP in 2022 — has transformed the surrounding area dramatically, but Kuta town itself retains more of its original character than might be expected.
