Mataram

Lombok capital conurbation combining Ampenan, Mataram, Cakranegara, and Sweta, each with distinct character.

Mataram is the capital of Lombok, though in practice it is four towns that have merged into one sprawling conurbation: Ampenan, Mataram, Cakranegara (Cakra) and Sweta. Each has its own character.

Ampenan, the old port district, is the most atmospheric part of the conurbation, with its faded colonial shophouses and quiet waterfront. The West Nusa Tenggara State Museum in Ampenan gives a good overview of Lombok's cultures — Sasak, Balinese Hindu, and Islamic — with a strong textile collection. Cakranegara (Cakra) is the liveliest area and the best base for eating and shopping. It is also home to the Mayura Water Palace and Pura Meru, Lombok's largest Hindu temple, which face each other across a main road. Mataram proper is the administrative centre, and Sweta (Mandalika Terminal) is the island's main transport hub for buses and bemos.

Getting Around

Mataram is a sprawling city best navigated by taxi or ojek (motorbike taxi). Taxis with meters are available; apps such as Grab also operate in the city. The four merged districts (Ampenan, Mataram, Cakranegara, Sweta) spread over several kilometres, and walking between them in the heat is impractical.

For exploring Lombok beyond Mataram, renting a motorbike or car is the most flexible option. Both are readily available through guesthouses and rental shops in the city. Many visitors use Mataram as a base for day trips to Senggigi beach, the Gili Islands (via the Bangsal harbour north of the city), and the slopes of Gunung Rinjani.

Getting There

Lombok International Airport (LOP) is about 40 km south of Mataram, near Praya. Taxis to the city take 45 minutes to an hour. There are flights from Bali (30 minutes), Jakarta, Surabaya, and some regional routes.

From Bali, the popular option is the fast public ferry from Padangbai to Lembar (about 4 hours), which arrives at the port south of Mataram. Slow ferries and speedboats from Bali's Serangan and Benoa harbours also run. From the ferry terminal at Lembar, taxis and bemos take you into town.

The main bus and bemo (minibus) terminal is at Mandalika Terminal (Sweta), on the eastern edge of Mataram, with connections to destinations around Lombok and longer routes to other islands.

Things to Do

Most travellers pass through Mataram quickly on their way to the beaches and volcanoes of Lombok, but the city rewards a half-day of exploration. The main cultural sights are concentrated in Cakranegara — the Pura Meru, Lombok's largest Hindu temple, and the water palace at Taman Narmada — while Ampenan's old port neighbourhood has a more layered atmosphere than the administrative districts.

The museum is the other worthwhile stop: the West Nusa Tenggara State Museum gives good context for Lombok's Sasak, Balinese Hindu, and Islamic cultural mix before you head out into the island.
