Museum Siwalima

Museum Siwalima is Maluku province's main cultural museum, perched on a hill about five kilometres from the city centre in the Amahusu area. The location gives it a superb view over Ambon Bay, and the hilltop setting is pleasant in its own right.

The collections cover the natural history and ethnography of the Maluku archipelago: traditional boats, musical instruments, textiles, tools from the spice trade, weapons, and ceremonial objects from the islands' diverse communities. There are also sections on the colonial period and on the natural environment of the islands. Labels are primarily in Indonesian, but the objects speak reasonably clearly for themselves, and the combination of the collection and the view makes this one of the better ways to spend a morning in Ambon.

A story
The museum takes its name from the Ambonese phrase "siwa" (nine) and "lima" (five), referring to the traditional nine and five confederacies of villages on the island that formed the basis of pre-colonial Ambonese political organization. The name is a deliberate act of cultural recovery — a claim that Maluku's identity predates and outlasts the centuries of colonial administration the museum also documents.
