Masjid Raya Al Munawwar is Ternate's main mosque and one of the city's clearest modern landmarks, set close to the sea with minarets rising above the waterfront. The building is relatively recent, but its position gives it the visual authority of an old civic monument.
For non-Muslim travellers the best approach is respectful exterior viewing, especially around sunset when the mosque, harbour, and volcanic backdrop line up well for photographs. It also helps orient the compact city centre, where the sea, markets, and old sultanate sites are all close together.
