Jiwika

A small Dani settlement on the eastern side of the valley, an hour or so from Wamena by bemo, and a common base for short treks. Jiwika is the easiest place to see traditional honai-cluster compounds, watch the smoke from morning fires drifting through thatched roofs, and visit the nearby villages where Dani mummies are kept.

A simple losmen (the Lauk Inn was the historic standby) gives you a base for hikes to the salt wells at Iluwe, the caves at Gua Kontilola and Gua Wikuda, and the ridgetop villages above the road. Expect to negotiate small fees for photos and for entry to mummy-keeping compounds.

A story
Jiwika is best known for the smoke-blackened mummy of the Dani warrior chief Wim Motok Mabel, kept in a honai in a nearby village and brought out for visitors who pay the customary 'donation.' The mummy is said to be roughly 250 years old. Several villages in this part of the valley keep similar ancestral mummies.
