Lake Habema

High Papuan lake above the Baliem Valley, surrounded by moorland and mountain forest

Lake Habema sits high above the Baliem Valley, around 3,200 metres up in Papua's mountain country. The landscape is a sharp change from the valley floor: cold air, moorland, mossy forest, orchids, and views toward the higher peaks when cloud lifts.

Reaching it usually means a long drive from Wamena and either a guided excursion or the start of a longer trek. The lake is worth considering if you want to see the Baliem region as more than villages and valley paths, but the altitude and weather make it a proper mountain outing.
