Wamena

The valley's only town and the practical hub for any trip into the Baliem. The Pasar Jibama market on the edge of town is the most interesting single stop in Wamena itself — Dani farmers come down from the surrounding hills in traditional dress, and the produce on display (sweet potato varieties, fern shoots, freshwater fish, smoked pork) is the staple of the highland diet.

Wamena has the valley's airport, its hospital, the police permit office, basic guesthouses, and a handful of warungs. Don't expect culture inside town — go for the perimeter villages and the trekking routes north and east.

A story
Wamena exists only because of an Indonesian government decision in the 1950s to build an administrative post on the valley floor. Everything in town arrives by plane — there is no road from the coast. As a result, fuel, food, and beer all cost roughly two to three times what they cost in Jayapura.
