Supiori Island

The island immediately north of Biak, separated by a narrow strait, Supiori is almost entirely covered by protected rainforest and is home to some of the most pristine marine environment in the Cenderawasih Bay region. Much of the island falls within conservation areas and it sees very few visitors, making it one of the more genuinely remote day-trip destinations accessible from Biak.

Boat trips from Biak town or Bosnik can reach Supiori in one to two hours depending on sea conditions. The diving and snorkelling around Supiori's coastline is exceptional, with little fishing pressure and healthy coral systems. Bird watching is also a draw — the forest holds several Papuan endemics. There are no tourist facilities on the island; any trip requires organisation through a Biak-based operator or direct arrangement with local boat owners.

A story
Supiori was administratively separated from Biak in 2003 and became its own regency, though geographically the two islands are nearly contiguous, separated by a narrow strait. The creation of a separate regency was partly motivated by the desire of Supiori's smaller population to have administrative autonomy — a pattern seen across Papua, where district proliferation has created dozens of small regencies with minimal infrastructure but formal government status. Supiori today is essentially roadless beyond its coastline and is primarily accessed by boat.
