Getting There

Jayapura is reached by air at Sentani International Airport (DJJ), about 30 km west of the city centre. Daily flights connect to Jakarta, Makassar, and Denpasar, with smaller turboprop services into the highlands (Wamena, Timika, Nabire) — these inland flights are weather-dependent and often delayed. Book everything well in advance; high-season flights into the Baliem Valley sell out weeks ahead.

From the airport into central Jayapura, taxis charge a fixed rate (negotiate at the desk) and the trip takes 45–60 minutes depending on traffic over the Youtefa Bridge. There is also a slow public bemo route via Sentani town and Abepura.

There is no scheduled passenger ferry service to Papua New Guinea across the border at Wutung, but the Pelni ferry network connects Jayapura by sea to other Indonesian ports — a multi-day journey best left to those with time.
