Hamadi Beach and Memorial

WWII landing beach with rusting amphibious craft still on the sand

Hamadi was the second Allied landing point in the Hollandia operation. Decades later, parts of the wreckage are still visible — two rusted amphibious landing craft remain half-buried on the beach, slowly disintegrating into the sand. A simple monument inland marks the operation.

The beach itself is not Jayapura's best for swimming (Base G is cleaner), but it has the Pasar Hamadi market a short walk inland — the best place in town for souvenirs, with stalls selling penis gourds from the highlands, bark-cloth paintings, woven bags from Wamena, and bows and arrows. Bargain hard; prices start high for foreigners.
